Abstract:
The Airports and Heliports database, developed by the U.S. Geological Survey and Montana Base Map Service Center, is a geographic point layer of aircraft landing facilities in Montana. This layer includes airports, heliports, stolports, ultalight and sea plane bases. Attribute data is provided on basic physical characteristics, location, and contact information for these landing facilities. Attributes were derived from a variety of sources. There are 273 landing facilities in the Airports dataset.

The data were modified in 2015 for inclusion in the Montana Digital Atlas application. The values in the Name, City, and owner names were changed from all upper case to upper and lower case. Time-sensitive fields such as the name and address of the facility manager were removed.

Data set credit:
Creation of this data was made possible through funding from the Montana Homeland Security Taskforce GIS Subcommittee. The database was created by the United States Geological Survey, Montana National Spatial Data Infrastructure Partnership Office in Bozeman Montana. Certain existing data from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), Federal Aviation Admintistration (FAA), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard assessment (HAZUS) databases were used to intially populate the database.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
Attributes were primarily compiled from FEMA's HAZUS data, BTS's NTAD data, online Census data, and FAA's APT text files and can be assumed accurate within the bounds of those sources. Attributes such as contact names and phone numbers will change and will require maintenance.
Quantitative attribute accuracy assessment:
Attribute accuracy value: untested

Completeness report:
Primary source for geographic location was FEMA HAZUS data. Sea plane base, stolport, and ultralight base locations derived from BTS data. Location of facilities not included in HAZUS or BTS derived from FAA APT text files. Primary source for descriptive attributes was FAA APT data. FEMA HAZUS data, online Census data, and GNIS also used as sources for attributes.

Source contribution:
APT data was the definitive source for most descriptive attributes in the Airports layer. APT data was source for name, city, ownership, use, runway information, site number, owner and manager contact information descriptive attributes. Data were obtained from the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) National Airspace System Resource Aeronautical Data. This product was published by the Aeronautical Information Services (ATA-100) with an Effective Date of 05 August 2004.

Process step:
Primary source for geographic location was FEMA HAZUS data. Heliport, seaplane base, stolport, and ultralight base locations are derived from BTS data. Location of facilities not included in HAZUS or BTS are derived from FAA APT text files. Primary source for descriptive attributes was FAA APT data. FEMA HAZUS, Census 2000, and GNIS also used as attribute sources. APT data was source for name, city, ownership, use, runway information, site number, owner and manager contact information descriptive attributes. GNIS data was source for gnis_id and gnis_fname descriptive attributes. HAZUS data was source for tract, fema_name, and airportfltyid descriptive attributes. Tract numbers for features not contained within HAZUS data were obtained from Census online sources. Data was compiled using ESRI ArcGIS into personal geodatabase format. Shape files were exported from the geodatabase.
